With concerted efforts made by the Foreign Economic Cooperation Centre, Chinese Ministry of Agriculture and the Chinese SSC Mission, Abuja, three Chinese doctors have come to Nigeria to serve in the following locations: Dr Yin Tongbai, stationed in Kano State, contact phone number ---08024472922; Dr Zhang Chunting, stationed in Bauchi State, contact phone number ---08042359824; Dr Liu Liaoyuan, stationed in Cross-River State, contact phone number ---08032939190. B. On January 30, 2006 Chinese Ambassador Mr. Wang Yongqiu, accompanied by Counselor Wang Lei, Counselor Huang Jie and Diplomacy Attach Wang Daohao, paid a visit to the residence of the SSC Mission, extending cordial greetings of new spring. The Embassy officials wished all the SSC members a good health, happiness of their whole family and everything to be turned out as they wish in the new year. The Ambassador Mr. Wang pointed out in his speech that under the leadership of the Party Central Committee led by the Secretary-General Mr. Hu Jintao, China has been making outstanding progress in modern construction of socialism. With national economy continuously kept rapid and stable in development, China has become the fourth largest entity of global economy successively after the United States, Japan and Germany as well as the third largest trade nation in the world after the United States and Japan. It has been making important steps forward in its reform and opening process, bringing about prosperity of the nation and continuous improvement of urban & rural peoples life. The Ambassador said that the year 2006 was considered the starting year when the eleventh five-year plan was to be implemented. We should make full use of various favorable conditions and new opportunities to bravely deal with difficulties and new challenges. According to him, the relation between China and Nigeria had developed fast over the past year. Both parties had increasingly wide cooperation and exchange in such fields as politics, economy, military affairs, science & technology, culture and education. In April last year the Nigerian president Mr. Olusegun Obasanjo visited China, and in May Vice Chairman of Chinese National Political Consultative Conference Mr. Wang Zhongyu paid a visit to Nigeria. Apart from that, several state governors of Nigeria also visited China, and quite a few of Chinese economic & trade organizations paid their successive visits to Nigeria. The volume of trade between China and Nigeria had topped $3 billion. Chinese construction companies had made smooth progress in contracting building of projects owned by the Nigerian government. When it came to Sino-Nigeria SSC, the Ambassador said the Chinese SSC Mission had made achievements that attract worldwide attention, beginning from the year 2003 through its diligent efforts. The SSC achievements had evoked great repercussions all over the country, which helped ram the foundation of the relation between the two countries. The Embassy had always concerned itself with the Missions work, and paid much attention to it in addition to firm backing to the Missions daily operation. It had also worked for further awareness of Sino-Nigeria SSC, which made more and more Nigerian political forces and folk organizations understand the achievements and effectiveness made by the SSC Mission. Meanwhile, the Ambassador, as always, emphasized the priority of safety and security. He urged upon all the SSC staff the importance of self-protection. He said all the SSC units around the country should keep in close touch with local police setup, providing against possible troubles. On behalf of all the SSC staff, the SSC Coordinator Mr. Wang Xiangzhu made a report on the SSC progress. He went into his instruction in particular on the achievements made in the fields such as biogas development, apiculture, cage fishery farming, incubation of day-old chicks, borehole drilling, etc. The coordinator said the SSC Mission would act in the spirit of what the Ambassador instructed, attaching great importance to the matter of safety and security and strengthening measures for safety and security. We would try our best to let each SSC member fulfill their SSC contracts safe and sound and return to motherland decently. Counselor Wang Lei said in his speech that successful implementation of Sino-Nigeria SSC would surely promote the relation between the two countries. He felicitated all the SSC staff on their achievements ever made despite quite a few difficulties encountered like working and living for the first time abroad, unadaptability of living environment, communication gap, longing for family members and others. He encouraged all the SSC members to go on with their efforts and make further contributions in the future. Counselor Huang said in his speech that the SSC staffs had made achievements in their previous work. Now that we did not have much time left, we should work harder to win overall approval of our achievements from the Nigerian party. Not long ago the Nigerian government ever discussed the possibility of expansion phase of SSC of its own accord, which fully showed that Nigerian high policy-makers had been satisfied with the implementation of SSC, and that they paid more and more attention to such kind of technical aid like SSC. We should do our best to help expand Sino-Nigeria SSC. SSC agronomy technician Wang Xuemin spoke on behalf of all the SSC technicians. He said SSC technicians were so much obliged to the Embassy officials for their kind concern. With strong support of our motherland, SSC staff would overcome various difficulties and perform SSC duties with more enthusiasm. We would report to our leadership at all levels with much better achievements. At the end of their visit, the Embassy officials had a group photo taken to mark the occasion. C. The following are the extracts from individual yearly work reports in 2005 by SSC fisheries technicians. C-1. Zhan Xi, posted to Edo State, helped a local chief in Benin construct a concrete fishpond of 150m2 and a full-closed snail-rearing house of 120m2 in early 2005, where 180 catfish fingerlings, 400 tilapia fingerlings and 180 pairs of brooder snail were separately reared a week later. By the end of September, the average individual weight of catfish came to 1.6kg, with the biggest individual weighing 2.4kg. Two batches of snail were sold, numbering 5, 800. Apart from that, upon invitation of Mr. Eseka, chief of fisheries office of the state ADP, he and another SSC water control technician designed a fry propagation base, capable of producing one million catfish fry, which total input was 870, 000. It was put in operation in late May, outputting 820, 000 catfish fries by the end of the year. In the year, they also built 2 spawning tanks of 14m2, 4 incubating tanks of 15m2, 3 fry nursery tank and concurrently well-water aeration tanks of 144m2, 4 nursery tanks for brood fish of 120m2 and an auxiliary house of 56m2. C-2. Liu Gongqing, deployed to Cross-River State, implemented his micro-project on Agua Vista Farm, south of Calabar. The micro-project involved fish-fowl-vegetable integrated farming, from which output of adult fish reached 4, 480kg/ha as unit area yield. Average broilers weight touched 2.7kg upon 60 days of raising, ready for market sale. The weight was 0.7kg more than that of a broiler raised by local farmers. The benefit of integrated farming operation was 4.2 times, compared with the single-farming activities. C-3. Liu Zhonggui, fielded in Ogun State, started artificial propagation of catfish and nurture of fry in April. Recently artificial propagation could be conducted once every two months, with induced spawning rate up to 90% on average and hatching rate, 80%. Each time 50, 000 ~ 100, 000 could be produced. C-4. Wang Li, stationed in Katsina State, threw himself into the fisheries development projects in local governments. He supervised construction of fishpond at 11 project sites, totaling 45, 000m2. Besides, he rehabilitated provisional fry-nurturing tanks of 400m2. C-5. Zhao Wei, posted to Kogi State, carried out his fish-cum-fowl integrated farming project. The fishpond area was 200m2 while the poultry house covered an area of 9m2, which was set up on water surface, semi-open structure. Beginning from mid June 900 fingerlings were put in the fishpond after they were soaked for disinfection with 3% salt water. At the beginning of August, a group of brood fish was induced spawning, outputting 1, 000 fingerlings and netting 20, 000 on sale. C-6. Xu Zhenqiu, deployed to Enugu State, performed technical service in early January with one of his SSC colleagues Liu Yixin on Phinorma Farm where there were 2.7ha of fishpond. They led 21 farm workers in renovation of 5 fishponds of 6, 000m2, treating seepage with plastic cloth laid at the pond bottoms. It cost them 68 days, making use of earth by nearly 10, 000m3. Upon completion, a seepage-resistance test was conducted soon enough, showing good result. In Ezegu Community there was a natural fountain, producing a flow of about 100m3/h. Only part of the water was utilized for drinking while nearly 90% was wasted. For that reason, they designed two fishponds nearby, one big and one small, respectively covering an area of 2, 500m2 and 700m2. The pond depth was 2.5m, whereas water depth was designed to be 1.5 ~ 2.0m. The big one was used for culture of adult fish while the small one was for nurture of fry. By the end of June, they began to fill the two ponds and fertilized the water. At the beginning of August fingerlings were put in, in a density of 3 catfish and 2 tilapia per square meter. Altogether they put in 8, 000 catfish and 4, 000 tilapia fingerlings. Upon culture for 4 months, the biggest ones reached over 1kg in weight. It was estimated that the output could be up to 15, 000kg/ha. C-7. Yi Ronggan, fielded in Lagos State, implemented his micro-project of fowl-cum-fish integrated culture at Ikorodu. The poultry of 8m2 was built over the fishpond of 100m2. 40 eight-week-old layers were raised while 800 clarias fingerlings, individually weighing 20g and 200 tilapia were reared. The result showed that the average egg-laying rate was 75%. 220, 380 was earned on sale of layers, eggs and fish. Deducting total cost of 150, 800, 69, 500 was netted as profit. The profit rate was thus 46.14%. In late March when he offered technical assistance on Eletu-Oke Ikorodu Fishery Farm, Yi told the farm proprietor to settle a toad for each nurturing tank of about 20m2 to stop mortality of fry in large quantity after hatching, for toxin secreted by toad could kill many kinds of pathogenic bacteria and pathogens, helping control fry mortality. By April when he paid a visit back to the farm, the farm proprietor was happy to tell him that his method worked. Survival rate of fry had been improved by at least 30%. The proprietor had not only controlled fish diseases by means of this method, but also introduced it to the nearby colleagues who bred fry and fingerlings. When he performed service on Masta Farm, Yi taught the farm workers how to feed clarias fingerlings with pounded garlic mixed with feed in a proportion of 1 : 10 to deal with mortality caused by complication of bacillarily- rotten gill lamella and bacillary enteritis. For continuous three days, the mortality was finally controlled, and six days later, fingerlings were all cured. As for the nurturing tanks nearby where there were no such diseases, Yi told the farm workers to put 50 ~ 80g of dry tobacco leaf (to be changed once every ten days) in each tank for prevention of diseases, resulting in good effect. In late May, Yi helped Orioke Fishery Farm to treat parasitosis for clarias fingerlings by means of Chinese local method, in which 25g of dry ginger and 50g of chili were boiled in water for half an hour, and spread all over in an area of 100m2 of water surface with 1m as depth. For consecutive 3 ~ 5 days the parasitosis was controlled, and 7 days later conditions resumed normal. Also in May and June, Yi was invited to Ope Oluwa Farm and Waheed Farm in Lagos and to Ijebu-Ode Poverty-Dispelling Committee, respectively holding training classes on complete techniques of artificial propagation of clarias. Separately at the above three locations fry were obtained by 80, 000, 50, 000 and 60, 000. After training, all the attendants were able to carry out artificial propagation for clarias, and to hatch fry. C-8. Peng Chaohe, fielded on Efugo Farm, Kuje, FCT, helped build 4 fishponds of 520m2 as total area. He took charge of the technical management on fishery after the fishponds were put in operation. Altogether 12, 390 catfish fingerlings and 2, 000 tilapia fingerlings had been put in. Currently 28, 000 were stocked as a total. On average, individual weight was 1.2kg. Survival rate touched 89%. C-9. Guo Yuehui, deployed to Edo State, started to carry out his micro-project of Control between Fish-cum-Fowl Integrated Farming and Mono-FisheryMXbef# h k + , X o ½~wpwibXbQwQbQb h%TCJo(h#h#CJo( h#CJo( htCeCJo( h$YCJo( hmCJo( hPDCJo( h^uCJo( hmCJ h]CJo( hc17CJo( hQ2*CJo( hFv)CJo(h67h67H*o( hQ2*o( hHo(hQ2* hQ2*aJhQ2*CJOJQJ^JaJo(hQ2*CJOJQJ^JaJhQ2*5CJOJQJ^JaJhQ2*CJaJ%+MXef , 3O P N&gdQ2*gdQ2* $@&a$gdQ2*vff ! * M ] ^ j k - g L žzssle^eWP hWCJo( h'CJo( hD&]CJo( h)CJo( hk=CJo( hgCJo( h~]CJo( h_CJo( h~CJo( h]CJo( hZCJo(hUCJOJPJQJo( hUCJo( hvCJo( hvCJ hx+CJo( hICJ hICJo( hgOCJo( h3CJo( h%TCJo( h^f~CJo( h#CJo(h#h#CJo(L N O dfgm8VYzXo»~wpib[ hbVCJo( h+j[CJo( hECJo( huCJo( hCJo( h CJ h#CJo( h CJo( hK>CJo( h4CJ h4CJo( hLMCJo( hdyCJo( hMCJo( ho`CJo( hbCJo( hV8CJ hV8CJo( h!CJo( hCJo( hX CJo( hHoCJo( hJCJ hJCJo( oUZ)/QiȻ|v|ohaZSL hCJo( hpTCJo( hF@CJo( hm~CJo( hCJo( hUCJo( hwCJ hwCJo( h4vCJo( hK"CJo( h$_CJo( hDy9CJo( hCJo( hC'CJo( hcMCJo( hf CJo( hgxTCJo( h+xCJ h+xCJo( h&CJo( h;CJo( hT\CJo( hT\CJ h]CJo( hbVCJo( h@CJo(!01DEP[lDlrw 234xüђ~wpib\U hGv$CJo( hGv$CJ h3CJo( h>:sCJo( hCJo( hVCJo( h@>CJo( h%CJo( h%CJ h*CJo( hoCCJo( h!CJo( h7CJo( h xCJo( h RtCJo( h)CJo( hOACJo( h I CJo( h@CJo( hbbCJo( h>CJ h>CJo( hDJCJo( hCJo( hCJxBbtXc~ HIKlIJWk~wpic\U hNCJo( hmCJo( hmCJ h"CJo( h ,CJo( h#CJo( htBCJ htBCJo( h"CCJ h"CCJo( hJWCJo( hg-CJo( hCCJo( hCJ hCJo( h(CJo( hQbCJo( hw-ZCJo( hCJo( hrCJo( hrCJo( he CJo( h(<CJo( h)^CJ h)^CJo( k$]DR2 ' ( 4 8 B N O P U q ü}voovh} hCJo( h0CJo( h{CJo( h4XCJo( h:P_CJo( hMCJo( h}0CJo( hlCJo( hNIUCJo( hQCJo( hO1CJo( h5CJo( h.CJo( h.CJ hCJo( hq;CJo( h|CJ hITCJo( h|CJo( hdaUCJ hGv$CJo( hdaUCJo('q >!b!o!q!r!!
